Survey Shows Hawaii Residents Are Less Stressed, Exercise More Than National Average

ADA, Mich., Sept. 15 While 93 percent of Americans reportattempting to make everyday choices to be healthy and live well, 44 percent ofHawaii residents say they struggle to do so, according to the Amway GlobalWellness Index, a recent national survey of more than 15,000 Americansregarding their health and wellness. Hawaii residents report that the two mainbarriers preventing them from living a healthier lifestyle include lack oftime (38 percent) and the costs associated with eating a balanced diet(25 percent).

Hawaii Wellness Challenges:

Stress

Twenty-seven percent of Hawaiians report having a "very" or "somewhat"high stress level, according to the Amway Global Wellness Index, which is muchlower than the national average of 40 percent. Forty-six percent of Hawaiiresidents find that talking to family and friends is a highly effective way ofcoping with their stress. Increasing physical activity (37 percent) and sleep(32 percent) also top the list, while 19 percent practice yoga and 14 percentturn to food for comfort. Only 9 percent of residents decrease the time theyspend using technology gadgets to reduce stress.

Exercise

The survey shows that 18 percent of Hawaii residents, versus 23 percentnationally, are not exercising for at least 30 minutes or more at a time on aregular basis. While better than the national average, that's well under theCenters for Disease Control (CDC) recommendation of a minimum of 30 minutes ofmoderate-intensity physical activity per day or a minimum of 20 minutes ofvigorous-intensity physical activity three days a week. When it comes to thework commute, 87 percent of Hawaii residents drive or use publictransportation. However, when they do exercise, the focus is on generalwellness (38 percent), cardiovascular endurance (24 percent) and weight loss(22 percent).

Sleep

While 43 percent of Hawaii residents report that not getting enoughexercise is one of the biggest wellness challenges, 30 percent also reportgetting enough sleep as a major challenge. Only 7 percent of Hawaiians judgetheir current state of wellness by the amount of sleep they get.

Weight

Forty-one percent of Hawaii residents consider themselves obese oroverweight, yet only 20 percent of Hawaii respondents gauge their state ofwellness by their current weight.

The Election, Economy and Wellness

Thirty-three percent of Hawaiians and 33 percent of Americans claim thatthe candidates' positions on personal wellness will influence how they votethis election. Additionally, 42 percent of Americans, versus 36 percent ofHawaiians, report that the economy is having a negative impact on theirwellness choices. For the nation, current economic conditions also arenegatively affecting the wellness of 51 percent of non-working parents versus43 percent of working parents. And, when it comes to the battle of the sexes,the health of women is affected more by the economy (44 percent) than men(40 percent).
