PHILADELPHIA, May 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Travelers Aid Family Services announces the appointment of Stacey Waller as Acting Executive Director.  Waller succeeds Dr. Ted Weerts, who is leaving Travelers Aid by mutual agreement, having served more than a decade with the non-profit agency.

TAFS partners with public and private funders to provide a continuum of services including a family shelter, transitional housing for families, permanent housing for the disabled, stranded travelers assistance, and educational services for homeless children, and operates an information booth at AMTRAK's 30th Street Station staffed by volunteers.

"We have full confidence in Stacey's ability to lead the agency as we navigate through these challenging economic times, when more people than ever swell the ranks of the homeless," said Michael Homans, TAFS board president.

For the past two years, Waller has served as TAFS Director of Programs, supervising the agency's 50 staff members who provide shelter, guidance and assistance to more than 250 homeless families and 2,000 travelers annually.  Stacey has a master's degree and a bachelor's in social work from Rutgers University, and has studied to obtain a doctorate in criminal justice.  She has worked in social services for more than 22 years, including more than 15 years in managerial roles at Travelers Aid, Intercultural Family Services, Safe Horizons, and Womanspace, among others.

"On behalf of our Board of Managers and staff, and the thousands of homeless families who benefited from Ted Weerts' tireless work for more than a decade, we say a heartfelt thank you.  We wish Ted every future success," said Homans.  "The change in leadership will not affect Travelers Aid's programs, residents or contracts, except that Waller may bring fresh perspectives and ideas.  This is a great opportunity to renew our commitment to the families and children we serve, and to review and re-energize our services."

The agency will delay its search to fill the executive director position to give Waller an opportunity to demonstrate her ability to lead the organization through this transition and assume the position on permanently, said Homans.

Travelers Aid Family Services is a 501(c)(3) non-profit social services agency dedicated to helping the homeless and travelers in need.  Founded in Philadelphia in 1901 as the Travelers Aid Society, TAFS recently changed its name to reflect its dual mission of assisting both homeless families and stranded travelers.  For more about TAFS, visit
