St. David's Round Rock Medical Center officially began the process the State of Texas requires for designation as a Level II Trauma Center in June 2009. Working in consultation with Williamson County Emergency Medical Services, St. David's Round Rock Medical Center identified a need for a Level II Trauma Center in Williamson County.

"Pursuing this designation is a long road, but a rewarding one for St. David's Round Rock Medical Center," David Martin, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of St. David's Round Rock Medical Center, said. "Our commitment has been to ensure the hospital and staff is prepared to treat all trauma patients to include the most severely injured patients, and I am confident we have achieved that goal."

As an initial step in the process of becoming a Level II Trauma Center, St. David's Round Rock Medical Center -- under the direction of Chief Medical Officer Martin, a general surgeon with 14 years of trauma experience -- recruited Michael Craun, M.D., F.A.C.S., a highly qualified and experienced trauma surgeon and board-certified critical care specialist, to be the hospital's Trauma Medical Director. Additionally, Rick Moore, RN, LP, was hired as the hospital's Trauma Nurse Director.

"It is such a privilege to be a part of this new venture for St. David's Round Rock Medical Center," Craun said. "As director of this trauma center, I know we will be able to provide the residents of Williamson County with the highest level of care in the community. We will continue to build our staff and hold training exercises to prepare us for any and all trauma cases that may come our way."

St. David's Round Rock Medical Center developed a multi-disciplinary physician steering committee to build the infrastructure and begin training staff for the trauma program. A trauma can occur as the result of a car accident or a fall -- in many cases, the difference between life and death following a trauma is time. Hospital leaders describe the program as a multi-specialty service with general surgery, orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery at its core.

St. David's Round Rock Medical Center began providing trauma services on January 4, 2010, and has the capability to treat all categories of injured patients.
