Six UK Hospitals Join Together in Using Varian Medical Oncology Information Network

PRESTON, England, Sept. 4 Six hospitals in thenorth of England are implementing a Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR)software system that enables them to function as one clinical network. Therollout of ARIA(TM) for Medical Oncology at hospitals in Lancashire andCumbria is expected to improve patient care and departmental efficiency byfully integrating the prescribing, preparation, dispensing and administrationof drugs for treating cancer.

The network will include oncology centers at the Royal Preston Hospital,Royal Blackburn Hospital, Burnley General Hospital, Blackpool VictoriaHospital, Royal Lancs Infirmary and Furness General Hospital will effectivelyhave a single integrated computer network for chemotherapy prescribing andpatient records.

Dr Gerry Skailes, the project's clinical director of oncology, says, "Thiswill allow a seamless transition around the network and will enable patientsto travel from one of our hospitals to another, as they tend to do if they arehaving both chemotherapy and radiotherapy. ARIA was selected because itideally fitted our specifications and it is a well-established and trustedsystem.

"The result will be a more streamlined service which will enable us toprovide better care for our patients while increasing our awareness of thetreatments we are providing. It will make it a lot more convenient for allconcerned."

Steve Laws, Varian's medical oncology sales manager, says, "ARIA forMedical Oncology provides cancer treatment facilities with software thatcombines and manages information including scheduling, prescribing andclinical information for both radiation therapy and chemotherapy within asingle comprehensive electronic medical record for each patient."

Varian's medical oncology solution is already in place in several UKhospitals, including in London (St Barts), Norwich, Stoke, Truro and Romford,and is now being implemented across a number of other cancer networks.
