Registered nurses from the Seattle-King County Public Health District will picket outside the New County Office Building on November 6th to voice their concerns as contract negotiations have stalled despite several mediation sessions.

"Public health nurses are dedicated professionals committed to caring for some of our most vulnerable population. Because of the shortage of nursing staff, we are often limited in our ability to respond to the basic health care needs of our community. This can result in adverse medical outcomes and compromise the care that our community receives," said Bill Johnston, RN, WSNA Local Unit Chairperson.

"The complete absence of movement in recent negotiations is very concerning and the lack of attention by the county towards nursing recruitment and retention is alarming. It is simply bewildering that the County would rather spend over a million dollars each year on agency staff while refusing to invest in core nursing staff to adequately meet the demand of the inmates' health care needs in the jails," said Barbara Frye, RN, WSNA Director of Labor Relations.

Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA) represents more than 300 nurses in the Seattle-King County Public Health District. Public health nurses are an integral component of the public health department, providing critical services to our communities including communicable diseases and immunizations, emergency preparedness, chronic disease prevention, child and youth health, and injury prevention.

Founded in 1908, WSNA is the professional organization representing more than 13,000 registered nurses in Washington State. WSNA effectively advocates for the improvement of health standards and availability of quality health care for all people; promotes high standards for the nursing profession; and advances the professional and economic development of nurses.
