CHICAGO -- According to the CDC, an influenza pandemic could infect 30percent of the overall American population -- that's 1,057,731 to 1,586,697residents in Cook County alone. Even more, in a report released by the Trustfor America's Health in 2007, it is estimated that if a pandemic flu outbreakhit the state of Illinois, the projected impact on its workforce could mean upto a $31.3 billion loss.

Businesses need to prepare ahead of time rather than wait until a state ofemergency.

To help inform local businesses, George Abercrombie, president and chiefexecutive officer of Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., will speak to community businessleaders about how to develop pandemic preparedness plans in the event of anavian flu outbreak in Chicago. The speaking event is being hosted by TheRotary Club of Chicago.

Under his direction, Roche has developed its own pandemicreadiness plan and has spoken with more than 800 companies to help developaspects of their business' continuity plans.
