COLUMBIA, S.C., Aug. 11 PGBA, LLC, announced the receipt of a contract award from the Federal Bureau of Prisons for medical claims adjudication services. The contract includes a two-year base period and three one-year option periods for an estimated aggregate value of $7.3 million.

Contract claim volumes will be phased in over a four-year period. The contract will include claims submitted for the health care services for federal inmates from facilities located throughout the contiguous United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

The claims will come from hospitals and other health care services professionals who provide services to inmates who must be transported out of the prisons and into the community for care. Until now, the Bureau of Prisons handled its own claims processing.

The Bureau of Prisons' claims adjudication service operations will be located in PGBA's Surfside Beach, S.C., office, and will eventually include up to 27 people in staff and management positions. The official start work date is expected to be late this year.

"We're excited to have the Bureau of Prisons as a new customer," said PGBA President Michael J. Skarupa.

Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., PGBA serves as a claims processing subcontractor administering the U.S. Department of Defense's TRICARE North Region for Health Net Federal Services and the South Region for Humana Military Healthcare Services.

PGBA handles approximately 50 percent of the nation's TRICARE claims processing, serving nearly 6 million beneficiaries and providers. The company also subcontracts with commercial insurance companies to process Medicare Advantage claims. PGBA has offices in Columbia, Florence and Surfside Beach, S.C.
