SAVE Recognizes National Suicide Prevention Week

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 13 Suicide Awareness Voicesof Education (SAVE) is recognizing Suicide Prevention Week (September 9-15,2007) this week with a special appearance at the Minnesota Twins game onSaturday, September 15 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.SAVE is a national, non-profit organization based in Minnesota whose missionis to prevent suicide through public awareness and education and serve as aresource to those touched by suicide.

At the Twins game Saturday evening, SAVE, in partnership with MedicaHealth Plans, will distribute information on managing depression, healthyliving skills and suicide prevention in the Metrodome concourse throughout theevening. Dr. Dan Reidenberg, executive director of SAVE and Scott Craven,regional vice president of United Behavioral Health, will recognize SuicidePrevention Week and the importance of suicide prevention in an on-field,pre-game ceremony.

Also in support of Suicide Prevention Week, SAVE, along with WCCO TV'sChief Meteorologist Paul Douglas, will host a Wine Tasting event Friday,September 14, 6-9 p.m. at Interlachen Country Club in Edina. The Wine Tastingis the fourth event in the 4 Cast 4 Fun series of awareness, education andfundraising events benefiting SAVE. Tickets for the Wine Tasting are availableby calling 952-946-7998.

Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States with onesuicide occurring on average every 16 minutes. Suicide is the 2nd leadingcause of death among 15-24 year olds and the third leading cause of death for10-14 year olds. Each year there are over 500 suicides in Minnesota making itthe 10th leading cause of death in the state.

SAVE is committed to the education of the general public about thedepressive brain diseases (such as clinical depression and bipolar illness)that can result in suicide if left untreated. By educating the general publicabout such brain diseases, SAVE strives to remove the stigma associated withthese diseases. SAVE's prevention and education programs include a school-based program educating staff, parents and students, community andprofessional presentation through a volunteer speaker's bureau, professionalconference presentations and exhibitions, educational materials distributedinternationally, national multi-media public service advertising campaign andcommunity action kits.
