RxEOB's Annual Client Summit Brings Industry Leaders Together - Outlining Strategies & Opportunities To Engage Healthcare Consumers Plus The Need For New Metrics
RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 14 -- RxEOB’s Annual Client Summit, held this year on September 16th and 17th in Virginia Beach, brought together leading healthcare pharmacy, marketing, technology, and medical management experts to explore how pharmacy programs can advance the overall health plan strategic agenda. Three main items were discussed: (i) the reinforced need to engage consumers, (ii) the development of a new set of metrics to measure the impact of the pharmacy program, and (iii) the opportunities created from the mobile internet. To capitalize on these trends and further serve their clients, RxEOB also unveiled several product enhancements, new products, and research initiatives.
Attendees used the collaborative format to elaborate on the key issues:
The need to engage consumers. Perry Cohen, President of The Pharmacy Group in Glastonbury, Connecticut, keynoted the Summit with his presentation titled “The Healthcare Marketplace 2009.” Fitting for the audience at hand, Perry presented the current healthcare landscape as revolving around a ‘pharmaceutical manufacturer-centric’ world, combining insights from the past 20 years with current trends to suggest that health plans must enhance their ability to engage consumers to remain relevant, particularly for the emerging younger market-segments.
Better metrics to measure the pharmacy program and overall engagement. Dr. Norman Carroll of Virginia Commonwealth University presented the research he is conducting in conjunction with RxEOB, outlining the creation of a new set of metrics to appropriately measure pharmacy benefit effectiveness in light of these new trends. Specifically, he outlined new data-driven indices for benefit design appropriateness, formulary effectiveness, and overall engagement strategies. Particular emphasis was placed on combining pharmacy data with outcome measures to help demonstrate the ROI of both clinical and consumer engagement programs.
Taking pharmacy and healthcare “mobile”. Kevin Agatstein, founder of Agate Health in Washington, D.C., continued with his presentation titled “Engaging the Mobile Consumer; Implications for Health Insurers.” The discussion provided an in-depth analysis of the role smart phones will play in advancing managed care’s clinical, operational, and marketing programs, and in particular the pharmacy benefit. Combining statistics, research, and projections of online use with a heightened sense of importance for health plans and employers to effectively reach their populations, Kevin set the tone for the next communication medium to come.
RxEOB’s CEO & President, Bob Oscar, parlayed the resulting discussions into setting the direction for the remainder of the meeting, beginning with recapping last year’s successes, then demonstrating several legacy product and new product development updates. Most notably, enhancements to both RxEOB’s member platform as well as to several internal-user features were revealed, along with an overview of RxEOB’s advanced consumer engagement initiative, focusing on handheld technology.
