PHILADELPHIA, June 5 Capital Returns, Inc. (CRI), thepharmaceutical industry's leading processor of pharmaceutical returns, todayannounced that attendees at the Philadelphia area regional PharmaceuticalDisposal Summit will get a first look at a consumer medication return pilotprogram launched last month in a two-county area in Wisconsin. Sponsored byexcelleRx and U.S. EPA Region III, the summit will include environmental andpharmaceutical executives who were invited to meet today in Philadelphia todiscuss the critical issues surrounding pharmaceuticals in the environment.

CRI is set to brief attendees on "Get The Meds Out," the pioneering jointeffort between the University of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Department ofNatural Resources and CRI.

The pilot program involves more than 500,000 potential participants in atwo-county area. Consumers in Waukesha and Winnebago counties can call aspecial 800 number to receive a pre-paid shipping label. CRI will handle thecalls, explain the process, provide a return authorization and send out apre-paid label for the expired or unused medications, excluding controlledsubstances. Once consumers receive their pre-paid labels, they package theirmedicines for shipment back to CRI. Packages received by CRI are processed, separated and then disposed of through incineration. The entire process isfree to consumers.

A research report published by the U.S. Geological Survey, determined thatpharmaceuticals have been detected in multiple waterways throughout the U.S.

As the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency begins its attempt to modifyregulations that would potentially clear the way for more national andstatewide medicine take-back programs, the significance of thisfirst-of-its-kind pilot is already being established.

"We are honored to be invited to present our solution to pharmaceuticalleaders here in Philadelphia," says Mary Hendrickson, director of Quality andRegulatory Affairs for CRI. "The Get The Meds Out program is creatingnational attention that will only help advance consumer understanding of theissue and ease the creation of a national medication return program in thefuture."
