The field of health IT is having a significant impact on the way physicians practice medicine, affecting how they see patients, document treatment, and receive payment. One of the biggest drivers of change — and areas of challenge — is the government's incentive program for the meaningful use of EHRs. According to the Physicians Practice 2013 Technology Survey, respondents cited EHR adoption and implementation as their most pressing health IT problem. And while 76 percent of survey participants had already implemented or were planning to implement an EHR in their practice, less than half had seen a return on their investment.
