WASHINGTON, June 16 Speaker Nancy Pelosi today issued the following statement about the announcement by the Department of Health and Human Services of a $250 million investment in strengthening and expanding the primary health care workforce, made possible by health insurance reform. This funding will help train 16,000 new primary care providers over the next five years:

"Today's announcement of another serious investment in our health care workforce is good for patients and good for the health and well-being of America's families. At its heart, the Affordable Care Act is about putting families and their doctors in control of their own health care--not the insurance companies. More doctors and primary care providers mean more time for quality care.

"This Congress has already made strides to train and grow our primary care providers with crucial investments in the Recovery Act to double the size of the National Health Service Corps, serving urban and rural communities facing provider shortages. Building on these earlier investments, today's commitment will support the training and development of more than 16,000 new primary care providers over the next five years.

"By working to repeal health insurance reform, Congressional Republicans threaten patients' access to the doctor of their choice, and would drive costs higher. By making these investments in primary care providers, Democrats are strengthening the health care profession and giving middle class families and America's seniors more certain access to affordable, high-quality treatment and care."
