Participants in Study Lose Twice as Much Weight With Medifast 5 & 1 Plan

'Nutrition Journal' published study showing Medifast's effectiveness compared to food-based diets

OWINGS MILLS, Md., July 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Medifast, Inc. (NYSE: MED) today announced that results of a recent clinical trial published in the 'Nutrition Journal' (Nutrition Journal 2010, 9:11) found that participants using the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan compared to a self-selected isocaloric food-based diet lost twice as much weight after completing an initial 16 week program.

The study tracked participants during weight-loss for 16 weeks and during weight maintenance for a period of 24 weeks. Participants were randomly assigned to either the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan or a self-selected isocaloric food-based diet.

Further results of the study showed that through 16 weeks, 93% of participants using Medifast showed significant weight-loss. The study also showed that participants on the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan demonstrated a significant increase in lean muscle mass as a percent of total weight. Participants on the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan also averaged 5 inches lost on their waistline in 16 weeks.
