Teen Driver Safety Week Puts Focus on Young Drivers

Teens are the most likely drivers to be involved in a crash, andstatistics show chances increase by 20 percent in late October as daylighthours get shorter, according to The National Road Safety Foundation. Thesecond annual National Teen Driver Safety Week is Oct. 19 - 25. More than7,400 teen drivers are involved in fatal crashes every year; crashes involvingteenage drivers are the leading cause of death and injury for people betweenthe ages of 15 and 20. More than 1.7 million teen drivers are involved intraffic crashes every year.

Halloween Can Be a Fire Risk, Choose Costumes Wisely

It's almost Halloween. This time of dress up and trick-or-treating alsocomes with risks -- fires and burns from sources such as candles andjack-o-lanterns, if they come into contact with certain Halloween costumes.The National Association of State Fire Marshals says to avoid flowing andloose-fitting costumes, as well as masked and over-the-head designs, which canimpede vision or make removal difficult in the event of fire. Costumes thatare snug or form-fitting are less likely to come into contact with ignitionsources, and children are also less likely to trip over them while walking.Also, look for labels that indicate the costume is made of flame-resistantmaterials. These costumes, if they come into contact with a flame, aresupposed to stop burning if the flame is removed.

National Survey Reveals Important Findings on Oral Health Care Perceptions

Eight out of 10 Americans say taking care of one's mouth, teeth, and gumsis "absolutely needed" and only one-third say they do an excellent job,according to a new public opinion survey by the American Dental Association,Crest, and Oral-B. Also in the survey, one parent in four says his or her kidsdo a "fair" or "poor" job taking care of their own mouth, teeth, and gums.Thirty-seven percent of those surveyed said they did not know poor oral healthhas been associated with health conditions such as stroke, heart disease anddiabetes.

Dunkin' Donuts Opens First 'Green' Store

Dunkin' Donuts has opened its first LEED-certified restaurant in Florida.The St. Petersburg restaurant is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(LEED) certified and includes other green initiatives such as innovativerecycling programs like worm casting and food donations to the local foodbank. LEED enhancements include energy efficient insulated concrete foam wallsto reduce air conditioning usage by about 40 percent, energy efficientlighting such as motion sensors for restrooms and offices, water efficientplumbing fixtures, and the usage of well water rather than potable water forall irrigation. An on-site earthworm casting facility features a solar-poweredtank that houses 80 lbs. of small red earthworms that will eat waste, such ascoffee grounds and paper products, produced by the store. The worms' wastewill then be converted into fertilizer for local farms and gardens.
