New Report Provides Information on HIV Prevalence in the U.S. HouseholdPopulation

Approximately half of 1 percent (0.47 percent) of the U.S. householdpopulation between the ages of 18 and 49 are living with HIV, according toestimates from CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) based onsurveys conducted between 1999-2006.

The findings are summarized in a CDC Data Brief issued on Tuesday, whichuses data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)to provide a snapshot of HIV prevalence in the general U.S. householdpopulation ages 18-49. NHANES does not focus exclusively on populations thatmay be at high risk for HIV, such as men who have sex with men, injection drugusers, homeless or incarcerated individuals.
