PALO ALTO, Calif., June 3 PEAK Surgical, Inc., a medicaldevice company that is developing a new tissue dissection system based on aproprietary technology, has appointed Terry E. Spraker, Ph.D., to thecompany's board of directors. Spraker most recently served as president,chief executive officer and director of Solarant Medical, Inc.
"Terry Spraker is a medical device industry veteran with more than 30years of experience," said John Tighe, president and chief executive officerof PEAK Surgical. "His experience serving as a CEO and managing and growingmedical device and equipment companies will be invaluable as we move our PEAKSurgery System through development and into commercialization."
The PEAK(R) Surgery System, PEAK's flagship product in development,combines the PULSAR(TM) Generator, which supplies pulsed plasma radiofrequencyenergy, with the PEAK PlasmaBlade(TM), a disposable cutting tool that offersthe exacting control of a scalpel and the bleeding control of traditionalelectrosurgery without the extensive collateral damage. The PEAK SurgerySystem is not yet available in the United States. The company has filed a510(k) pre-market notification with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration tomarket the system.
During his career, Spraker has served as CEO or president of two othercompanies in addition to Solarant Medical, a women's healthcare company.These include UroQuest Medical Corp., a publicly traded medical device companydeveloping urology and airway management products, and EP Technologies, amedical device company that marketed radiofrequency therapies used ininterventional cardiac electrophysiology. He joined EP Technologies when itwas a small venture-funded start-up company, successfully managed and guidedit through an initial public offering and secondary financing, and negotiateda merger with Boston Scientific.
Earlier in his career, he served as vice president/general manager of theglobal coronary business for Medtronic/AVE, a division of Medtronic, Inc.comprised of coronary, peripheral and endovascular business units. At Ohmeda,a medical equipment and pharmaceutical manufacturer of anesthesia and criticalcare products, he served in a variety of positions, most recently as presidentof the Medical Systems Division. Spraker's experience also includes servingas a venture partner with Aberdare Ventures, a venture fund focusing onbiotech and medical devices. He currently serves on the board of directors ofSpineWorks Medical, Inc.
Spraker received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from theUniversity of Bridgeport as well as a master's degree in electricalengineering and a Ph.D. in bioengineering from Pennsylvania State University.
