COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 17 As temperatures cool down in California, many kids may find unwelcome visitors in their classrooms and cafeterias - mice. Late fall is the time that schools are most likely to experience a mouse infestation, as mice head indoors looking for shelter and warmth in cooler weather.
This fall, Ortho® Home Defense MAX® has launched the "Safer Schools" program to help keep kids safe from mice. Any elementary school in the country that experiences a mouse infestation can request help, and Ortho will provide a free case of new Home Defense MAX Kill & Contain® Mouse Traps (a total of 16 traps). The new mouse trap is a simple, safe and clean way to kill mice, and is particularly well-suited for use around young children, since it won't snap fingers and is baited with food. It is also self-contained, meaning users don't have to touch or see the dead mouse.
Mice can be a factor in creating an unhealthy environment, since they spread disease and can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. A 2005 study of inner city high schools in a major northeastern city found mice allergens present in more than 80 percent of the schools.(1) Recent studies also suggest allergens from mice can lead to poor indoor air quality. Allergens can cause mild allergy symptoms such as dry, itchy or watery eyes, dry throat, lethargy, headaches or chest tightness. One study found that when occupants of a building experience mild allergy symptoms, they can experience a loss in performance depending on the number of allergy symptoms they have.(2) In addition, mice can also be very damaging to property and buildings. Mice have been known to cause fires, particularly in buildings with older wiring, as they may chew through wires in the walls.
"We understand that schools are experiencing more fiscal constraints than ever before, and maintenance budgets are being cut in many cases," said Keri Butler, director of public relations for Scotts. "Providing these free traps to schools to help them control a mouse problem is one small way we can help."
Butler adds that while large mouse infestations - evidence of more than 10 mice - are best handled by professional exterminators, the Kill & Contain Mouse Trap can help a school solve a mouse problem early, preventing a large infestation. Since mice reproduce very rapidly, a few mice can turn into hundreds if left unchecked. "Our research team found that one mouse can have 32 to 50 mice in a year, so it is essential to eliminate the problem early," continued Butler.
Any school that would like to participate in the program can send an email to SaferSchools@yandlpr.com for more information. Participation is limited to 1000 schools; the program is open to any elementary school in the country.
