Smart Capnography is being launched in response to last year's call fromthe Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) for improved patientmonitoring, including continuous carbon dioxide monitoring for patientsreceiving patient controlled anesthesia (PCA). Numerous clinical studies suchas have demonstrated conclusively that carbon dioxide monitoring provides theearliest indication of a change in a patient's breathing status. In fact muchprecious minutes earlier than traditional pulse oximetry monitoring alone.
In October 2006 the APSF conference set as a goal that no patient shouldbe harmed by opioid-induced ventilatory depression in the postoperativeperiod. To address this goal, healthcare professionals were urged to considerimprovements to patient safety with continuous monitoring of both oxygenationand ventilation in patients receiving PCA or neuraxial opioids in thepostoperative period.

Mr. Feldman went on to say that there is a growing body of scientific andclinical evidence that indicates there is a significant risk of seriousinjury from patient controlled analgesia (PCA) and other opioids in thepost-operative period. " Not only has the Joint Commission includedrecommendations on the use of improved monitoring of ventilation, the APSFhas recently released its view that: ...the recognition of patients atincreased risk for ventilatory depression and utilization of appropriatecontinuous monitors such as end tidal carbon dioxide and pulse oximetry,would improve patient safety during pain management in the post-op period."
Currently the new SARA software is pending FDA 510 (k) clearance.
