Significant findings from the medical research projects showed thatend-tidal CO2 is the best early indicator of breathing problems. Studiesconducted at leading universities and medical centers point out that theMicrostream response to breathing changes improves patient safety and reducesrisk during procedural sedation and patient controlled analgesia. A DukeUniversity study presented at the 2007 meeting of the American Society ofAnesthesiologists ("ASA") concluded that a successful post-operativerespiratory monitoring strategy designed to detect abnormal breathing wouldrequire more than respiratory rate measurement. Microstream capnography willimmediately recognize changes in exhaled carbon dioxide and is more sensitiveto breathing alterations than respiratory rate or pulse oximetry as pointedout in another US multi-center trial. Medical University of South Carolinaphysician/scientists presented at the ASA research validating the importanceof capnography monitoring for early identification of airway problems duringprocedural sedation.

An early warning system, using Microstream capnography, is critical forrecognizing breathing problems during procedural sedation, as documented inresearch by a French physician in his paper to the American Association forRespiratory Care's annual congress ("AARC") and published in November'sRespiratory Care. The French study examines the limitation of pulse oximetryas a respiratory monitoring technique. This report is one of six researchpapers being presented at this year's AARC that demonstrates the clinicalvalue of Microstream technology.

These sixteen international studies clearly demonstrate that capnographyneeds to be included in a hospital's respiratory monitoring strategy.
