The OmniPod(R) Insulin Management System is the first and only continuous insulin delivery system of its kind on the market. The OmniPod System offers people living with insulin-requiring diabetes all the benefits of insulin pump therapy, with unprecedented freedom, comfort and ease in managing their diabetes. Unlike conventional insulin pumps, the OmniPod System has no tubing and features automated, virtually pain-free insertion. It has just two, wireless components: the Pod - a, compact, lightweight, self-adhesive insulin delivery device that is worn discreetly on the skin beneath clothing; and the Personal Diabetes Manager - a wireless, menu-driven, hand-held device that programs the Pod.

The Edison Best New Product Awards, sponsored this year by Google, The Nielsen Company and Steelcase, focus on new products and services that excel in marketplace innovation, marketplace success, technological innovation, market structure innovation, and societal impact. These criteria align with Edison's own innovation best practices, called the Five Competencies of Innovation. MENG members nationwide cast their ballots for entries they deemed worthy of being linked to the Edison name.

"We are honored that the OmniPod System has been recognized for its innovative design and the positive impact it has on the lives of people with diabetes," said Duane DeSisto, president and CEO of Insulet Corporation. "When we created the OmniPod, we started with a blank slate and took a customer-centric approach to designing a new insulin delivery system. Its tubing-free, wireless design makes it totally discreet and the Pod is watertight and durable enough to be worn by many professional athletes. The OmniPod's automated, virtually pain-free insertion means customers never see or handle an insertion needle."

"Innovative, collaborative, passionate, and persistent are just a few of the many characteristics that describe the finalists for the 2009 Edison Best New Product Awards," stated Sarah Miller Caldicott, great grandniece of Thomas Edison, co-author of Innovate Like Edison and Chairperson of the Edison Awards Steering Committee. "All of our 2009 finalists, each in different ways, exemplify the very best in innovation."

Gold, Silver and Bronze winners will be announced at an Awards Gala on April 1, 2009 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. To register to attend, visit www.edisonawards.com/Awards/2009EdisonAwards.html.
