Located halfway between Atlanta and Birmingham, Ala., RMC is a 336-bed hospital and the only Level II Trauma Center in Eastern Alabama. The hospital's Emergency Department (ED) employs 14 physicians and logs 50,000 annual patient visits. A JCAHO-accredited facility, RMC's position as a regional medical leader stems from its investment in advanced technology such as Allscripts.

The Allscripts system will integrate with existing hospital information systems to provide enhanced communication, better management of high-risk patients, and improved access to critical patient information both inside and outside the hospital.

"Automating our Emergency Department with Allscripts is going to make us more efficient and allow us to spend more time with our patients," said Edith Trammell, R.N., Emergency Department Nurse Manager for RMC. "With all of the safety checks and balances in the Allscripts system, our providers will have all of the information they need, right at their fingertips, to provide the absolute best patient care with a much lower chance of error."

The Allscripts Emergency Department Information System electronically streamlines processes for the entire Emergency Department, including tracking, triage, nurse and physician charting, disposition and reporting. Integrated features include "one-click" access to individual patient charts, the ability to view multiple charts simultaneously, to track the entire patient treatment experience at a single glance, and alerts that notify the clinician of overdue treatment times, medication conflicts and conflicting orders.

The Allscripts solution also features remote chart access for community caregivers and hospital staff, so they can securely access an ED patient's chart via the Web without logging into the ED solution. Additionally, its sophisticated analytics identifies workflow bottlenecks that slow care delivery, and monitors quality outcomes to ensure better care.

"This is a system that is intuitive and doesn't make you change the way you practice medicine - it was clearly designed from a physician's perspective and fits with the way we provide care in the Emergency Department," said Trammell. "Most important of all, Allscripts offers real support from a company with lots of successful, live implementations, which gives us the confidence that we have a partner we can depend on."

Along with the EDIS, RMC will implement the Allscripts Forms Library, which provides pre-built clinical decision support guides that enable physicians and caregivers to quickly and accurately document and manage the most common types of patient encounters. Additionally, Form Builder enables caregivers to create new forms within the EDIS or transfer existing paper forms into the system, making it easier for physicians to transition from paper to electronic recordkeeping.

"Having immediate access to the right patient information at the right time is more critical in the Emergency Department than in any other healthcare setting," said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. "Our EDIS solution makes the process of managing and caring for Emergency Department patients safer, faster, and easier than ever with features like remote chart access and our forms library, which provides the latest clinical decision support. We're pleased that Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center selected Allscripts as their partner to help their caregivers provide better care for the communities they serve."

RMC will integrate the Allscripts Emergency Department Information System with its McKesson STAR hospital inpatient information system, providing interoperability of patient information.
