New York Hospital Queens received the award as one of 100 hospitals thathave demonstrated the greatest progress in improving hospital-wide performanceover five consecutive years. The study to benchmark the best performers ismanaged by Thomson Healthcare, a healthcare information company that studiesoutcomes data and trends. The company shares the data so that all hospitalscan use it to improve their own performance. The 2006 study used publiclyavailable Medicare cost reports, and Medicare outpatient and outcomes datacompiled from 2001 - 2005.

The Thomson 100 Top Hospitals(R) Performance Improvement Leaders studysets national benchmarks for the rate and consistency of improvement inclinical outcomes, safety, hospital efficiency, financial stability andgrowth. The study reviews all U.S. hospitals licensed to treat Medicarepatients. Eight performance measures are examined at each hospital: risk-adjusted mortality and complications, average length of stay, expenses,profitability, cash-to-debt ratio, growth in patient volume, and risk-adjustedpatient safety index.
New York Hospital Queens was selected as a result of the following gainsover the course of the study:
New York Hospital Queens, located at the heart of Queens in Flushing, NY,is a 439-bed acute, tertiary care facility. The hospital is a member of theNew York-Presbyterian Healthcare System and is an affiliate of Weill MedicalCollege of Cornell University.
