"We started offering free days of care almost nine years ago because of a significant need," said Jerome Blum, DDS, corporate dental director for United Concordia Dental. "Today, that need is even greater. In fact, a recent study from the National Association of Dental Plans reveals that four in 10 Americans—over 125 million people—do not have dental insurance."

In 2008 and 2009, United Concordia Dental has helped deliver dental care at no cost to 6,371 people with minimal or no insurance. The national dental insurer expects to help deliver more than $1 million in free dental care by the end of this year.

"The cornerstone of our success is an ability to build partnerships," said Woodrow Greene, community outreach coordinator for United Concordia Dental. "With the help of our partners, we are raising awareness of the importance of oral health and providing much-needed dental care in underserved communities."

United Concordia Dental works with dentists, dental clinics, community organizations and dental hygiene schools to bring free dental care, including exams, x-rays, sealants and fillings, to people with minimal or no insurance.

Since January, the national dental insurer has partnered with organizations, including its parent company, Highmark; sister subsidiary, Davis Vision; the Arizona Dental Foundation; the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh; City of Houston; Kanawha Valley Dental Society (W. Va.); and State of Georgia Oral Health Program to hold 48 free days of dental care.
