SHARON HILL, Pa., Sept. 9 In the wake of unsettling news about the presence of Bisphenol A (BPA) in some reusable aluminum bottles, Nathan Performance Gear, a leader in hydration, reflective, and multi-sport gear and accessories, restates its guarantee to consumers that its line of stainless steel bottles is 100 percent BPA-free. Additionally, Nathan is urging consumers to continue the ditching of disposable bottles in favor of environmentally-friendly reusable bottles, helping to cut down on the estimated 38 billion disposable water bottles that end up in landfills annually.

"In the midst of this controversy over aluminum bottles, we understand consumer disillusionment but urge them not to abandon the reduce, reuse, refill messaging that has been doing so much good," says Megan Russell, vice president of marketing and sales for Penguin Brands, Inc., of which Nathan is a subsidiary. "We continue to encourage consumers to make the switch to a reusable bottle."

Having realized the increasing importance to consumers of using BPA-free products, Nathan made the conscious decision in 2007 to begin work on a line of stainless steel bottles made from 18/8 stainless steel, more commonly known as food grade or 304 stainless steel. Among its many beneficial properties, 18/8 stainless steel is chemically inactive, eliminating the need to include a liner in the bottle. Additionally, stainless steel is 100 percent recyclable, does not affect flavor, and is one of the most hygienic surfaces available, as its unique surface has no pores or cracks to harbor dirt, grime or bacteria.

Nathan's initial steel bottle line launched in the summer of 2008, and has continued to expand to include more colors, cap options, and sizes, with a kids line of 320 mL stainless steel bottles planned to debut in early 2010.

"As more and more consumers make the switch to reusable bottles, it's imperative to provide them with bottle options that are safe, durable, and eco-friendly," says Jon Reichlin, CEO of Penguin Brands, Inc. "While consumer opinion may differ on the safety of BPA, we have and will continue to exercise full disclosure in terms of what our bottles are made of, ultimately giving consumers the confidence and assurance needed to make an informed purchase for them and their entire family."

In the wake of such uncertainty and confusion regarding aluminum bottles, Nathan, which does not produce any aluminum bottles, has updated its web site to include a letter from Reichlin, as well as a stainless steel bottle "Frequently Asked Questions" document, to allay consumer concern and confusion. Consumers with additional questions are encouraged to call Nathan customer service at 800-523-2844.

"Regardless of your personal stance on Bisphenol A or different bottle brands, we encourage all consumers to ditch disposable bottles in favor of a reusable bottle that suites you and your lifestyle," says Reichlin.

In addition to its line of stainless steel bottles, Nathan continues to offer its line of 500 and 700 mL Pure Bottles, made with the BPA-free copolyester Tritan(TM). Bottles retail for $10 and $14, respectively.
