The company was selected for pioneering a novel medical device platform that uses patented, responsive implants designed to bridge the gap between disease monitoring and treatment. MicroCHIPS' technologies have broad applicability, from 'rescue' applications in diabetes and cardiology, where precise therapy at a critical moment can save a life, to long-term treatment with highly effective drugs, such as bone-building agents for osteoporosis.

"MicroCHIPS' technologies have the potential to couple in-body sensing with the most effective use of potent therapeutics to enable the delivery of the right dose of the right therapy at the right time. This is essential to optimally treat dynamic clinical conditions," explains John Santini, PhD, CEO of MicroCHIPS. "Our vision is to offer patients treatment that is responsive to their particular condition. We are honored to have been awarded the Technology Pioneer distinction by the World Economic Forum."

Technology Pioneers are companies that have been identified as creating and applying highly transformational and innovative technologies. To be selected, a company must be involved in the development of life-changing technology innovation that has the potential for long-term impact on business and society. In addition, selected companies must demonstrate visionary leadership and show all the signs of being long-standing market leaders.

"Entrepreneurship, innovation and technology have always played a key role in shaping and improving society. These companies are planting the seeds of the next wave of growth and progress," said Andre Schneider, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of the World Economic Forum.

About MicroCHIPS' Technologies

MicroCHIPS' technologies are being applied to the creation of intelligent in-body devices that can sense vital biochemical changes, deliver potent drug therapies and communicate using wireless technologies. First developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the technologies use microreservoir arrays to store and protect chemical sensors or potent drugs within the body for extended periods of time. The reservoir arrays are compatible with preprogrammed microprocessors, wireless communications and sensor feedback loops to provide precise, dynamic control of sensor activation and drug release.
