Since September 11, 2007, GOALs therapists have trained sixty-four mentalhealth providers and educators in New Jersey and Washington DC. The trainingis conducted by licensed clinical social workers and certified grouppsychotherapists as part of The GOALs Center's on-going professional trainingseries and the topics have ranged from Grief Complications from Suicide andHomicide to Traumatic Reminders: Opportunity for Healing.

The GOALs Professional Training Series continues into the spring withtrainings scheduled for March 11th, April 8th, May 13th and June 10th. Thesefree trainings are two-hour, evening sessions held once a month at the Collegeof Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ from 6:30 - 8:30pm.
Through the work they have done over the last six years with familiesaffected by 9/11, GOALs therapists have amassed a unique variety ofexperiences and knowledge base on people affected by grief, trauma and loss.The objective of the monthly seminars is to transfer this knowledge toeducators and mental health providers to further strengthen their responsecapabilities communities in times of need. Liz Adams, a school social workerfrom The Stony Brook School in Rockaway stated she attends because, "I getcreative group ideas for helping children in the school setting, I getanalytical and therapeutic information about loss, I get supervision topersonally support me through the challenges of working with kids who have hada traumatic loss, and I have fun. In addition, all of the staff members areinnovative, experienced, compassionate and professional. I know that I ambeing trained by the best in the field."
GOALs programs were originally created as a response to September 11, 2001to support families with children who lost a parent. It has since evolved intoan organization providing mental health support services to families, childrenand communities in grief. The GOALs Center also trains educators and mentalhealth professionals in our unique, resiliency-based model.
GOALs Center founder Maureen Underwood (LCSW, CGP) was named 2006 SocialWorker of the Year in New Jersey by the National Association of Social Workersand more recently The GOALs Center was recognized in the 'Annual Innovations'issue of Mental Health Weekly as one of the most innovative grief serviceproviders in the country.
