FORT BRAGG, Calif., Oct. 20 On October 24th at 11 am, representatives from local, state and congressional legislative offices will gather at a public ceremony celebrating Mendocino Coast District Hospital's (MCDH) designation as one of the nation's first "Healing Hospitals." Kelly Mather, founder of Harmony Healing House (harmonyhealinghouse.com), and developer of the Healing Hospital program, will present an award to hospital CEO Ray Hino as part of the hospital's annual Health and Wellness fair.
"This is an exciting milestone for us," says Hino, noting that the Healing Hospital program is an extension of the hospital's wellness strategy. "It gives us the ability to add meaningful depth to our existing program through its emphasis on a holistic approach to achieving and maintaining good health. It also enables us to extend our reach further into the community."
"The mission of a healing hospital is to improve health," adds Mather. "Mendocino Coast District Hospital is embracing the future of healthcare and taking the lead to create a healthy community. There are very few hospitals that have truly made it their mission to heal and not just treat the signs and symptoms of illness."
Role in healthcare reform. Last spring Hino decided it was time his hospital took a more active, grassroots role in healthcare reform. "Members of our community have always been able to count on our hospital to help them with injury, illness and diagnosis," he explains. "But it's time for our hospital to take a more proactive role in improving the health of our community. The healthier our community, the less need there is for costly healthcare resources. I truly believe this is the model for hospitals everywhere."
Healing Hospital criteria. To satisfy Healing Hospital criteria, every hospital department employs simple educational tools for patients and visitors that create health awareness and inspire healthy living. For example, testing departments offer biofeedback education for stress reduction; the surgery department offers a guided imagery CD to start the healing process before surgery, and obstetrics nurses use healing touch to quiet fussy newborns.
