While the overall number of men undergoing cosmetic procedures hasdecreased since 2004 (down 7%), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons hascited a steady increase in men seeking spider and varicose vein treatments.According to the organization, sclerotherapy, a procedure to remove spiderveins, was up 29% and laser treatment of leg veins increased by more than 31%since 2003. Statistics show that varicose and spider veins are most commonamong women (40% vs 25%). However, it has been noted that men are more likelyto suffer the intense symptoms associated with large problem veins, citingtroubles such as heaviness in the legs, night cramps, itching, swelling, ulcerations and bleeding.

Jeff, a 36 year old male from Atlanta, was one man who decided to takeaction before the veins became a problem.

"My condition was very mild but I didn't want to let it get to a pointwhere I believed it looked bad or where I felt I looked older than I was,"says Jeff. "The vein I had removed by EVLT could have and likely would haveprogressed to a more severe condition."

Although women continue to drive the market, oh2 is seeing more and moremen take advantage of their latest treatment options. According to consumerand lifestyle publicist Jason Ellman, it is not surprising that men are takingaction to improve their health and body image.

"Society and social norms have come a long way in the last 30 years," saysEllman. "Men are not only much more aware of their health and outwardappearance, but they feel more comfortable seeking treatments."

Doctors agree that the treatment of various types of veins have a verypositive effect on men, both physically and emotionally.

"[Vein disease] is as much a well-being issue as it is a health andaesthetic one," says Dr. Randy Rudderman, co-founder of oh2 Medical Spa inAtlanta. "Men are realizing that the accessibility and minimally invasivenature of current treatments can drastically improve their quality of life."

Whether the procedure is selected for aesthetic or medical reasons, thismen-trend shows no signs of slowing.
