LONDON, Sept. 16 McGraw-Hill Medical won a number of honours and awards at the British Medical Association's Medical Book Competition awards ceremony, including two category first prize awards and the contest's top prize, Medical Book of the Year. The coveted award went to the ground-breaking Robotic Surgery: Theory and Operative Technique by Drs Farid Gharagozloo and Farzad Najam.

Speaking about the award, Dr Vivienne Nathanson, Head of Science and Ethics at the BMA said: "The two authors deserve the highest of praise for this unique reference book that provides a complete overview of the techniques used in robotic surgery. . .This is an exciting and revolutionary branch of medicine that is going to play an ever expanding role in patient care in the coming decades. Anyone looking for comprehensive, up to date information on this emerging discipline should read this book."

In total, eleven McGraw-Hill Medical titles were 'highly commended' for the 2009 competition - the most honours received by the publisher in a single year to date. All books receiving this distinction were automatically shortlisted for first prize in their respective categories. Of the seven books shortlisted in the Surgery category, three were published by McGraw-Hill Medical with Robotic Surgery taking first prize before winning the competition's overall award.
Ms Marsha Loeb also commissioned the shortlisted text William's Gynecology, by Drs John Schorge et al, which captured first prize in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology category. "We were able to leverage both our trusted brand with a market need in creating William's Gynecology," she said, "and have created an effective and beautifully designed text and atlas."
Professor Robin A. Cooke's Infectious Diseases received a special prize - the BMA Illustrated Book Award. The book, described as "a window into the visual depiction of infections" with an "eye-opening style," was written by Professor Cook following his experiences in establishing the first pathology services in Papua, New Guinea, and his own studies into the pathology of stone age people as they came into contact with Western medicine.
McGraw-Hill Medical Spain was also honoured with a commendation for the book Cell Therapy by Damian Garcia-Olmo et al, a further testament to the publisher's outstanding international resources.
About the BMA Medical Book Competition
The BMA Medical Book competition has been conducted annually since 1994 by the BMA's Board of Science and administered by the BMA Library. It aims to encourage and reward excellence in medical publishing and patient information. All entries are reviewed by physicians and educators who are asked to consider accuracy, currency, originality, book production quality, and whether the title meets the needs of its audience. This year the competition received 684 book submissions.
