Maternity Care Doctors to Call for Renewal of MCARE Abatement Fund, Address Growing Shortage of Maternity Care Physicians

OAKS, Pa., Sept. 22 A group of southeastern Pennsylvaniamaternity care physicians will hold a press conference on Thursday, September25 at 12:00 PM at their practice in Strafford to raise awareness of thegrowing maternity care crisis in Pennsylvania, and how a legislative stalematein Harrisburg is contributing to that crisis. State Representative Mike Vereb(R-Montgomery) and other legislators from southeastern Pennsylvania willattend as well.

"For many of our Ob/Gyns, what happens in Harrisburg two weeks from nowcould very well determine if they keep their doors open," said Dr. StephenKrell, a board member of the Women's Health Care Group of Pennsylvania. "Ifthe legislature adjourns for the year without reauthorizing the MCAREAbatement Fund, it will be a crucial blow to our profession, and to the healthcare needs of pregnant women all over the commonwealth."

The state legislature is only scheduled to be in Session for three days inOctober before adjourning until January, 2009.
