Named in honor of the first woman dermatologist in the United States, theRose Hirschler Award has been given each year since 1988 to outstandingphysicians who have made a significant contribution to medicine and to thedermatologic specialty and whose achievement has served to enhance the role ofwomen in dermatology.

Dr. Hickman is a private practice dermatologist with DermatologyConsultants in Lynchburg, Virginia. She is also a consultant and clinicalinvestigator at The Education and Research Foundation, Inc. Dr. Hickman'sspecialties include general medical dermatology, clinical trials, especiallyseborrheic dermatitis, acne, and psoriasis. Her dedication to establishing theWomen's Dermatologic Society Foundation (WDSF) in 2004 has led to grantfunding for community service outreach projects and the creation of anendowment to ensure the future of WDS grant programs such as academicresearch, mentoring and service projects.

The Women's Dermatologic Society supports the careers and professionaldevelopment of women dermatologists. The mission of the Women's DermatologicSociety is to help women in dermatology achieve their greatest personal andprofessional potential by striving to foster, promote, and support women'sissues in dermatology; identify, train, and recognize women leaders indermatology; provide a forum for developing relationships and the exchange ofideas and research relevant to women's issues; and promote the highestpossible standards of ethics, research, patient care and education, as well aspublic education.
