WASHINGTON, July 8 The Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. (LFA) is accepting letters of intent until July 13 for grants to advance adult stem cell transplantation research in humans as a treatment for lupus, and to better understand pediatric lupus features and societal factors that affect the health-related quality of life of children, adolescents and young adults with systemic lupus.

The LFA will award one $100,000 grant for adult stem cell research. Both basic and clinical research applications will be accepted. Applications will be judged on the basis of their innovation and potential impact on understanding the role of adult stem cells on the pathophysiology and treatment of systemic lupus.

The LFA also will award one $70,000 grant for health-related quality of life research for pediatric lupus. Projects should address one or more of the following areas: development and validation of tools to measure quality of life in pediatric lupus, understanding of the impact of pediatric lupus on quality of life, determination of risk factors, development and testing of clinical interventions, and studying the impact of age, gender, race and or ethnicity on the various aspects of quality of life in pediatric lupus.

Both grants have the potential for second year funding. Full applications are due August 7 and the grants are to be awarded by September 18.

The LFA utilizes an electronic grants submission process. All interested grant applicants must submit LOI's and full application packages through proposalCENTRAL: https://proposalcentral.altum.com/.
