The network, which formed last Congress in support of the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act, renewed its call to action shortly after the reintroduction of the bi-cameral bi-partisan landmark legislation in the 112th Congress. The Senate sponsors include Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), John Kerry (D-MA) and Johnny Isakson (R-GA).  The House of Representatives sponsors include Donna Christensen (Del-VI) and Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ).  The bill is numbered S. 752 and H.R. 1352 respectively.

Uniting Against Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death.  This year alone it will claim over 160,000 lives -- more than the combined total deaths from breast, prostate, colon and pancreatic cancers. It is the leading cause of cancer death among men and women and among every ethnic group and our military.

"We have a profound opportunity to shape public health policy – now, continued Fenton-Ambrose. If we devise a coordinated and comprehensive plan for lung cancer -- not only will we saves lives, but we will reduce costs and cancer mortality – because we will have a plan that for the first time ever will address 30% of all cancer deaths – lung cancer.  We look forward to expanding our network and working collectively to ensure better outcomes for all those affected by this disease."

The Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act of 2011, declares lung cancer a national public health priority and requires a coordinated and comprehensive federal response to address all aspects of the lethal disease.  In addition, it would establish a demonstration program to begin the process of screening those at high risk for lung cancer.
