Most folks don't start considering Long-Term Care until they areapproaching age 60, but a key ingredient in the decision to purchase is yourfamily's health history.

"Many advisors who sell Long-Term Care policies agree that people who havefamily health histories of cancer, heart attacks and a myriad of other deadlydiseases, would be well advised to consider purchasing Long-Term Care at anearlier age. In these circumstances, age is less the determinant thancritical health issues," says Darras.

Purchasing coverage to protect you when you get old is very personal andpolicyholders should consider shopping earlier in life when the premiums areless expensive.

"Do plenty of research, pick your LTC carrier wisely," says Darras."Understand as we age, our health history may prevent us from qualifying forLong-Term care, so consider your options early on."

Darras advises that it is important to read and understand the language inyour policy and know the definition of skilled care, intermediate care andcustodial care. Your choice of policies should include those that pay for allthree categories including care given by non-professionals, such as familymembers or friends in the comfort of your own home. Make sure you don't needa written plan of care by your doctor or your carrier before you incur servicecharges.

To ensure you and your family are protected, get a sound second opinion.Your Long-Term Care decisions should prevent you from outliving yourretirement nest egg and becoming a burden to those you love, no matter whatyour age." says Darras.
