Lilly's Connelly Appointed to the President's Commission on White House Fellowships

WASHINGTON, June 10 The Office of PresidentGeorge W. Bush today announced the appointment of Deirdre P. Connelly to thePresident's Commission on White House Fellowships. Connelly is the presidentof U.S. operations for Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY).

"The White House Fellowships are America's most prestigious program forleadership and public service," Connelly said. "It's an honor to be selectedby the President to serve our country and to help prepare our nation'saspiring public service leaders."

The President's Commission on White House Fellowships, which is composedof 20 to 30 outstanding citizens who represent a broad range of backgrounds,interests, and professions, selects each class of White House Fellows. SomeCommissioners have served through several administrations and some are formerFellows. The Commission interviews National Finalists and then recommendsthose individuals it finds most qualified for the fellowship to the Presidentfor appointment as White House Fellows. The non-partisan Commission meetstwice a year: once in January to conduct regular business, and once in June toselect a new class of Fellows.

Since 1964, the White House Fellowships have offered outstanding youngAmericans the opportunity to participate in the day-to-day business ofgoverning the nation. After a highly competitive selection process, 11 to 19men and women are chosen to serve for a year as White House Fellows. Thefellowship year runs from September through the next August. Each Fellowworks full-time as a special assistant to a Cabinet member or seniorpresidential advisor and also participates in an education program designed tonurture his or her development as a leader.

In a typical year's education series, White House Fellows meet withcabinet secretaries, Supreme Court justices, members of Congress, militaryleaders, and foreign heads of state. Fellows may also meet with governors,mayors, sociologists, urban planners, scientists, representatives of interestgroups, foreign service officers, foreign policy-makers, fiscal experts,business and labor leaders, and commentators from the press and academiccircles. White House Fellows are also offered the opportunity to travel tomajor American cities, foreign countries, and military bases to exploregovernment and policy in action. These activities help Fellows develop anincreased understanding of the challenges facing American society and agreater sensitivity to the role of the federal government in dealing withthese challenges.

Many former White House Fellows have made significant marks in variousfields. Former Fellows of note include Doris Kearns Goodwin (1967 - 1968Fellow), who became a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, historian, and televisioncommentator; Henry Cisneros (1971 - 1972 Fellow), who became mayor of SanAntonio, Texas, and secretary of Housing and Urban Development during theClinton administration; Colin Powell (1972 - 1973 Fellow), who became ageneral in the U.S. Army, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Secretaryof State during the administration of George W. Bush; Wesley Clark (1975 -1976 Fellow), who became a general in the U.S. Army and Supreme AlliedCommander, Europe; William Roper (1982 - 1983 Fellow), who became dean of theUniversity of North Carolina School of Public Health and director of theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); Elaine L. Chao (1983 - 1984Fellow), who became president and chief executive officer of the United Way ofAmerica and director of the Peace Corps; and Paul Gigot (1986 - 1987 Fellow),who became a columnist and editor for The Wall Street Journal.
