In the last 20 years, "minimally invasive surgery" meant using analternative method of performing a surgery that eliminated the need for thesurgeon to make large "open" incisions in the body. But recently developedrobotic-assisted technology allows the surgeon to convert complex proceduresinto an even more minimally invasive experience for the patient.

This nationally recognized system empowers surgeons to operate moreprecisely while offering the patient the most minimally invasive surgerypossible. The patient experiences a reduced risk of complications, shorterhospital stays, and quicker recovery times. Advantages to the surgeon and ORstaff include faster setup, rapid instrument exchange, multi-quadrant accessand multi-image display capabilities, all of which will support a level ofprecision, dexterity and control that is unmatched in the Savannah area.

SJ/C is using the da Vinci robot for mitral valve repairs alleviating theneed to enter the chest in the traditional manner. It is also used forprostate cancer patients and candidates for certain gynecological procedures. Results for patients will include less pain, blood loss, and less scarring. Inaddition, this minimally invasive technique will minimize the potentialeffects of traditional prostate surgery by eliminating or reducing the risk ofimpotence.

Local surgeons as well as experts from Intuitive Surgical will be on handall day on the 26th during the tournament to answer questions regardingrobotic surgery and to allow guests and players in the tournament tophysically interact with the robot.
