Leading Health Economist, Dr. Hong Wang, Joins Abt Associates

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 14 Abt Associates announced thatDr. Hong Wang, M.D., Ph.D., has joined the company as a Senior HealthEconomist working primarily on the Health Systems 20/20 project, which is theUSAID Bureau of Global Health's Principal Project for Health SystemStrengthening.

His responsibilities will include overseeing and guiding the healthfinancing and economics activities of the project; leading the strategictechnical assistance and applied research assignments; representing theproject in meetings and public forums on financing and economics issues andtopics; and ensuring the quality of the project's health financing relatedwork.

Dr. Wang, most recently a faculty member at Yale University, has more than20 years experience in research, teaching, and consulting in health policyinternationally. Dr. Wang received his M.D. from Beijing Medical University,and his Ph.D. in Population Health from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.In the U.S., he has also been a Takemi Fellow in International Health at theHarvard School of Public Health in Cambridge, MA, and a Visiting Scholar inHealth Economics and Health Management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.In China he was deputy director of both the National Health Economic Instituteof the Ministry of Health in Beijing, and the Department of Health Economicsat Beijing Medical University. Dr. Wang has a solid and extensive researchbackground and has conducted studies and authored numerous publications onhealth policy issues particularly in the realm of rural community healthinitiatives, health insurance reforms, and health financing and paymentschemes.

In addition to his work as a professor and researcher, Dr. Wang has ampleexperience as a consultant in leading program design, implementation, andevaluation for international health projects for a variety of differentorganizations and contexts. He worked with the Chinese government indeveloping the Rural Health Improvement Program as part of the VIII World BankHealth Loan Projects in China, participated in a Harvard-led social experimenton community-based health care financing schemes in rural China, served as aconsultant for the Clinton foundation to lead the development andimplementation of a provider payment system to improve the efficiency andquality of HIV/AIDS patient treatment in China, and also developed humanresources programs for initiatives organized by the World Bank in Mozambique,Zambia, and Lesotho. Dr. Wang also has experience with health sectorcapacity-building in developing countries and has served as a key trainer forthe World Bank Flagship Workshop on health system reform in China, and as thecoordinator for the Network of Training and Research in Health Economics &Financing, an initiative sponsored by the World Bank and the MOH in China.

Dr. Wang is a member of the Global Health Workforce Alliance, the ScienceCommittee for IHEA, and the Chinese MOH Advisory Committee of Health Policy.He is also a Program Officer for the Milbank Memorial Fund. He has publishedmore than 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored six books.
