"We are very fortunate to have a caring and dedicated group of physicians," said Lakewood Regional Medical Center's CEO John Grah. "And I couldn't be more proud of them. Today, I'd just like to extend my sincerest appreciation to these amazing men and women who selflessly serve the greater Lakewood region with excellence in healthcare."

The significance of March 30 dates back to 1842 when the first anesthetic was administered to a patient. In keeping with the tradition of implementing state-of-the-art medical practices, the physicians and practitioners at Lakewood Regional Medical Center have been working tirelessly for the community. "Because of their service, we honor them on this day," said Grah.

Doctor's Day has been nationally recognized since 1958 and was signed into law in 1991 by President George Bush who said, "Common to the experience of each of them, from the specialist in research to the general practitioner, are hard work, stress, and sacrifice. All those Americans who serve as licensed physicians have engaged in years of study and training, often at great financial cost. Most endure long and unpredictable hours, and many must cope with the conflicting demands of work and family life."

Traditionally, Doctors' Day has been recognized by giving doctors a red carnation. Decades ago, the carnation was symbolic of healing, health and vitality, making it the perfect choice for the flower of Doctors' Day.

"I invite the public to celebrate Doctors' Day with us here at Lakewood Regional. If there is a physician who has gone above and beyond for you and has meant something in your life, feel free to reach out to that doctor with a message of thanks today," said Grah.
