Komen Travels to Republican Convention to Raise Awareness of Breast Cancer Issues

DALLAS, Sept. 1 Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R), the leaderof the global breast cancer movement, and its sister organization, the SusanG. Komen for the Cure Advocacy Alliance, are traveling to Minneapolis toeducate attendees of the Republican National Convention about breast selfawareness and to advocate for increased access to screening and treatment forthe uninsured and underinsured.

Komen for the Cure's presence at the GOP convention is centered aroundKomen on the Go(TM), a mobile experience that educates and engages people ofall ages in the breast cancer movement where they live, work and play. TheKomen on the Go cruiser will be located at the Minneapolis Convention Centeras part of the host committee's CivicFest. Komen on the Go will arrive atCivicFest on Sunday, Aug. 31, following their appearance in Denver for theDemocratic National Convention.

The Komen Advocacy Alliance is partnering with Komen on the Go tochallenge candidates to make the fight against cancer a national priority.Komen Advocacy Alliance volunteers will be stationed with the Komen on the Gocruiser, gathering signatures for its I Vote for the Cure(TM) petition. IVote for the Cure urges candidates to address three achievable goals that willsave lives and help end breast cancer forever:

ENERGIZE RESEARCH -- Increase investment in translational research, whichis essential to ensuring that scientific discoveries made in the laboratoryreach cancer patients as quickly as possible.

INCREASE SCREENING ACCESS -- Provide every low-income, uninsured, andunderinsured woman in America access to early detection by fully funding theNational Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection program by 2012.

ENSURE TREATMENT FOR ALL -- Ensure that all women diagnosed with breastcancer have access to high quality treatment.

1 in 8 American women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In 2008alone, an estimated 40,930 women and men will die in the U.S. from breastcancer. 2.5 million breast cancer survivors and their families want breastcancer to be a priority. 90 percent of voters want the federal government topay more attention to breast cancer research and access to screening andquality treatment for all, according to a survey commissioned by the KomenAdvocacy Alliance. Yet amazingly, nearly 90 percent also said they wereunaware of their preferred presidential candidate's position on issuesrelating to breast cancer.
