WALTHAM, Mass., Aug 28 Millennium Research Group's (MRG)US Vertebral Compression Fracture (VCF) Treatment Marketrack servicedemonstrates that interventional radiologists (IRs) are rapidly increasingtheir kyphoplasty procedure volumes, almost reaching the same level as spinesurgeons. In the past, spine surgeons performed the majority of kyphoplastyprocedures; however, IRs are rapidly closing the gap.

"One reason for this shift is the Deficit Reduction Act that came intoeffect in January 2007, in which reimbursement for a variety of proceduresperformed by IRs was cut," says Kevin Flewwelling, Senior Analyst at MRG. "Asa result, IRs may be looking to perform more favorably reimbursed proceduressuch as kyphoplasty. With IRs putting more effort into becoming trained onthis treatment, Marketrack data shows that the number of procedures theyperform is growing."

In the first quarter of 2007, of the facilities performing minimallyinvasive VCF treatments, the average number of kyphoplasty proceduresperformed in an IR facility was just over 9. In the second quarter of 2007,this number rose to nearly 12. As a result, IR facilities accounted for nearly47% of total kyphoplasty volumes captured by the survey sample in the firstsix months of 2007.

About Vertebral Compression Fracture Treatments

Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are minimally invasive, nonsurgicalprocedures designed to relieve the pain caused by VCFs. Both proceduresinvolve the insertion of a special bone needle through the posterior softtissues and the injection of a small amount of orthopedic cement through theneedle into the vertebral body. Additionally, kyphoplasty involves twoproprietary balloon devices that are inserted into the vertebral body andgradually inflated, thereby restoring it to its prefracture shape and height.
