BIRMINGHAM, Ala., June 15 The International Board for Certification of Safety Managers (known as BCHCM), a not-for-profit professional credentialing and educational organization, is proud to announce the opening of our Professional Educational Center. The Center, located at the Board office building in Helena, Alabama, offers "professional education" sessions on a variety of healthcare safety and hazard control topics. To celebrate this milestone, the Board will offer two patient safety-related educational sessions on August 25 and 26, 2010. The program for August 25 is entitled "Understanding Patient Safety, Open Systems, and Organizational Culture." The second session held on August 26, is a "hands-on" workshop entitled "Team Root Cause Analysis and Problem Solving." Please contact James T. Tweedy, Board Director, to register. Attend a single session for only $395 or attend both sessions for $695.

If you serve in a patient safety-related position, don't miss these valuable sessions. The programs are designed for small groups and seats are very limited. The Board will offer the Certified Patient Safety Officer (CPSO) Examination during the afternoon of August 25. The patient safety session does address some key CPSO Exam concepts but the session is not a CPSO Exam preparatory session. However, those desiring to sit for the CPSO on August 25 can register for the CPSO Self-Study Program prior to attending the session. The patient safety session will provide valuable information about the "function" of patient safety.

The "Team Root Cause Analysis" workshop is a hands-on opportunity to learn a problem solving process that produces results every time. The six-step problem solving system is powered by a dynamic five-step team communication engine. Those learning this process can return to their organizations and teach others this simple but powerful process. The workshop even teaches team members how to develop a tactical plan for implementing solutions.

The Board's philosophy about patient safety is a simple one -- healthcare organizations must learn to view patient safety as a function and never just another program. The Board encourages the use of system methods to integrate patient safety processes in complex healthcare organizations. Contrary to the views of some, hospitals actually operate as "open systems" with some "closed or high-reliability" subsystems. Patient safety leaders must realize the positive impact that effective communication, real-world education, system thinking, and safety culture development can have on the future of patient safety.

Candidates for CPSO Certification must complete a formal application and document relevant job experience and/or education. Applicants must obtain two reference evaluations from persons aware of their qualification for certification. Application and Reference Evaluation Forms can be printed from the Board website. CPSO Application and Exam Fees of $300 are not included in the tuition.
