INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 8 A proposal by the State of Indiana to close the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children's Home has prompted the 125,000-member American Legion Department of Indiana to revamp its annual Mid-Winter conference January 10-12, 2009, in order to organize and coordinate its members' nearly unanimous opposition to the proposal.

The Legion, which annually provides more than $50,000 in direct and in-kind support to the home, is among the foremost supporters of the residential and educational facility near Knightstown, Indiana.

To accommodate the volunteers, staff, alumni, and parents of current residents who have expressed their outrage to the Legion, the veterans' organization has rescheduled its regular Knightstown Home Committee meeting to a ballroom at the Indianapolis Marriott Hotel East, 7208 East 21st Street in Indianapolis. The ballroom will easily accommodate the 800 to 1,000 Legion leaders from around the state expected to attend the conference along with other interested parties.

Representatives of the governor's office, the Department of Health, the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs, and administrators from the Children's Home are expected to attend the meeting to discuss the proposal.

The American Legion's Executive Committee also will consider and vote on a statewide resolution setting its resources into motion in opposition to the plan. The 60,000-member American Legion Auxiliary and the 35,000-member Sons of The American Legion are expected to join the Legion in the action.

The meeting is open to the public.
