Thequestions posed to respondents determine if the respondents fit the inclusionand exclusion criteria from the trial sponsor, usually a pharmaceuticalcompany.

The design supports interviewingpatients in terrorist incidents to see if they are victims of weapons of massdestruction. The ESP system initiates questions about multiple possibleweapons exposure and then narrows the inquiry based on answers.
