PHOENIX, May 24 While age cannot be altered, SCAN Health Plan Arizona encourages seniors -- or anyone, for that matter -- to find ways to improve their health and maintain their independence in honor of Senior Health & Fitness Day on May 26. To support healthy and independent aging, SCAN has developed many programs to help all seniors in Maricopa County improve their health. Many of the programs they offer are available to anyone, not just SCAN's Medicare Advantage members.

"One of the most impactful things a person can do to improve health is get moving," said Tom Lescault, president of SCAN Health Plan Arizona. "Not only does physical activity build muscle and boost metabolism, it delivers social and mental benefits."

The SCAN Connections Resource Center offers a variety of ongoing classes designed for seniors, including Chair Tai Chi, Laughter Yoga, Qigong, and Stretching for Strength and Balance. These courses are available to all seniors. The Resource Center is located at 1313 E. Osborn Road, Suite 150, in Phoenix. More information about SCAN's classes is available by calling 602-778-3420.

SCAN Health Plan Arizona recently launched a pilot program with BrainSavers, a total lifestyle fitness program that incorporates the mind and the body, to measure the benefits of specific ongoing physical and cognitive exercises. Nearly 70 SCAN Medicare Advantage "Classic" members are attending hour-long classes three times a week for six months.

"We are excited about our partnership with BrainSavers because it is an opportunity to bring another program to our members that is designed to improve health, promote wellness and help people maintain their independence," said Dr. Marc Lato, medical director for SCAN Health Plan Arizona. "We should commend those who are taking steps toward better health in honor of Senior Health & Fitness Day and every day!"
