Oct. 28WHAT: Today, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the long-term impact of head injuries suffered by players in the National Football League (NFL). WHO: Dr. Julian Bailes, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at West Virginia University School of Medicine and Co-Founder of the Brain Injury Research Institute, will provide witness testimony to Congress. Dr. Bailes has conducted some of the earliest research into the impact of recurrent concussion on long-term brain injury among professional athletes. Throughout the 1990s, he served as the team physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers and he's been a team physician in either the NFL or NCAA Division I for 20 years. Dr. Bailes is available to discuss: -- Research showing that NFL players who had at least three concussions during their professional careers had three times the risk of clinical depression -- His work alongside Institute Co-Founder Dr. Bennet Omalu, who discovered the first clinical evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy - a progressive decline in brain function often due to concussion -- His experience as a neurosurgeon, a team physician, and an athlete.
