Highmark Caring Place to Launch Inaugural 'Child Grief Awareness Day' November 20

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 17 Children who have had someone die --especially a close family member -- can feel the impact of that loss forever.At the Highmark Caring Place, A Center for Grieving Children, Adolescents andTheir Families, children and adults receive support from others who have alsoexperienced a death and discover that they are not alone in their grief. OnNovember 20, schools in Pittsburgh, Erie and Central Pa. involved in TheCaring Team, an initiative of the Highmark Caring Place have planned a varietyof activities to show their support for grieving children during the first"Child Grief Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.

"Part of the mission of the Highmark Caring Place is to help othersunderstand the impact of death on children, and what they can do to help achild who is grieving," said Terese Vorsheck, Caring Place Director. "We hopethat by launching 'Child Grief Awareness Day' in Pennsylvania this year, wewill raise awareness of the needs of grieving children and help children inour schools and communities who are grieving receive the support they need."

On November 20, students in over 100 schools across Pennsylvania will showtheir solidarity, raise awareness of what grieving students are going through,and help those who need additional support learn about the resources availableat no cost through the Highmark Caring Place, a center that offers peersupport groups and referral services for children and their families who arecoping with the death of a loved one. The Caring Place has locations inPittsburgh, Erie and in Lemoyne, Pa. and will open a new facility inWarrendale, Pa., in early 2009.

The Highmark Caring Place provides peer support groups, referral services,adult telephone support, and educational programs and resources for grievingchildren and families. In addition, consultation services, as well aseducational presentations and resources, are available for schools and otherprofessionals in the community who work with children. Caring Place programsand services are offered at no cost. The Caring Place is a signature partnerof Highmark Healthy High 5, an initiative of the Highmark Foundation. Inaddition, the Caring Place is supported by community contributions. Thechildren and families are also supported by trained volunteers from thecommunity.

Resources available through the Caring Place for grieving children andfamilies can be accessed by contacting one of the facilities, or by visitingthe organization's Web site at www.highmarkcaringplace.com.
