The foot and ankle specialists at Weil Foot & Ankle Institute recently conducted a landmark study of 75 chronic heel pain patients and followed them for nine years after they received Extracorporeal Sonic Shockwave Treatment (ESSWT). Eighty percent of those patients are completely free of heel pain after nine years. This is the most extensive long-term study to date on the effectiveness of treating heel pain. The results were released today during a three-day, International Society for Medical Shockwave Treatment meeting, at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, June 24-26.
An estimated two million Americans each year and 10 percent of the population during a lifetime will experience plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick fibrous band of connective tissue on the bottom surface of the heel bone and extending along the arch. Its primary symptom is pain on the underside of the heel which is typically most severe first thing in the morning when getting out of bed.
ESSWT is a gentle non-invasive technique that delivers targeted high pressure, radial sonic shock-waves that travel through the skin. A few treatments of sonic shockwave enhance the body's natural self-healing process by softening the scar tissue in the plantar fascia and stimulating the formation of new blood vessels that help to promote natural healing. The procedure is performed without the need for a local anesthetic and the patient is able to walk and drive immediately.
