"We're very proud to have received the Baldrige Award this year," said Carolyn Paden, vice president of surgical services at Heartland Health. "We have worked very hard to continue to provide quality care to all of our patients, and Press Ganey has helped us reach our goals. Most importantly, they have helped us improve patient flow, which was an integral part of why we received this award."

In June, it was announced that there were a total of 42 Baldrige Award applications this year in the health care category. In September, the panel of judges selected a total of eight health care applicants to receive site visits. All of the applicants were evaluated rigorously by an independent board of examiners in seven areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce focus; process management; and results.

"We would like to congratulate Heartland Health on this outstanding achievement," said Richard Siegrist, president and CEO of Press Ganey Associates. "The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is one of the most prestigious awards an organization can receive, and Heartland is definitely deserving of this award as they have worked extremely hard to improve their organization in order to better care for patients and improve the health of the community."

The 2009 Baldrige Award recipients are expected to be presented with their awards in a ceremony in Washington, D.C., next year.

The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award

Named after Malcolm Baldrige, the 26th Secretary of Commerce, the Baldrige Award was established by Congress in 1987 to enhance the competitiveness and performance of U.S. businesses. Originally, three types of organizations were eligible: manufacturers, service companies and small businesses. Congress expanded the program in 1999 to include education and health care organizations, and again in 2007 to include nonprofit organizations (including charities, trade and professional associations, and government agencies). The award promotes excellence in organizational performance, recognizes the achievements and results of U.S. organizations, and publicizes successful performance strategies. The award is not given for specific products or services. Since 1988, 80 organizations have received Baldrige Awards.
