CHICAGO, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, AARP Illinois announced the appointment of Ruby Haughton-Pitts, to its State Executive Council. In this lead volunteer position, Haughton-Pitts will be a member of the organization's seven-member leadership committee, helping to determine AARP's state agenda.

An advocate of health care access for low-income Americans, Haughton-Pitts was appointed to the National Institutes of Health Advisory Council during the Clinton administration.

Haughton-Pitts brings with her over 20 years of experience in public affairs, public relations, communications and advocacy. She led The Metropolitan Group in the opening of its Chicago office in the fall of 2005 and continues to provide consulting services to the company nationwide while also starting her own business, R. Haughton-Pitts Communications. Previously, she was director of legislative and public affairs at CareOregon, Oregon's largest Medicaid health plan.
Continuing her efforts to create affordable access to health care, Haughton-Pitts served on the Oregon Governor's Racial and Ethnic Health Task Force. Haughton-Pitts currently serves on the board of directors of Women Employed and Our Community Health Information Network where she provides public affairs expertise.
Haughton-Pitts holds a bachelor's degree in rhetoric and communications from the University of Oregon and also attended Xavier University in Louisiana.
