DULUTH, Ga., April 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Merial, now part of Boehringer Ingelheim and the maker of HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel), announced today the launch of "Heartgardians," a consumer sweepstakes that gives people nationwide the opportunity to nominate a U.S. Service Member or Veteran to win an all-expense-paid trip to Nashville and a year's supply of HEARTGARD Plus for their dog.

Nominations can be made from April 3 to June 30 on heartgardians.com or via Twitter or Instagram by using the hashtags #NominateAVeteran and #Sweepstakes. For every nomination, the HEARTGARD Plus team will donate $10 to Warrior Canine Connection® (WCC), a non-profit organization that provides canine-assisted therapy to Service Members and Veterans affected by the invisible wounds of war. The HEARTGARD Plus team will contribute up to $100,000 to WCC in 2017.

"HEARTGARD Plus has helped protect millions of dogs from the dangers of heartworm disease and we're honored to work with an organization that helps support individuals who've made great sacrifices to protect our country," said Sarah Cloud, HEARTGARD Plus brand director. "With your support, we'll be able to help this unbelievable organization continue its mission of helping Service Members and Veterans reconnect with life, their families, their communities and each other through the healing power of the human-animal bond."

As part of the Heartgardians program, singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and five-time GRAMMY nominee Hunter Hayes will conduct a day of service at the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System on April 11, 2017 to raise awareness about dogs' profound ability to help heal a heart, and the importance of helping to keep dogs protected from heartworm disease. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition in dogs, and prevention of heartworm disease is recommended over treatment, as treatment is expensive and can be a painful, prolonged ordeal for dogs.

HEARTGARD Plus is the number one veterinarian-recommended1 heartworm disease preventive, and it provides trusted, proven heartworm disease prevention in dogs – all in a convenient monthly, real-beef chewable that they love2.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATIONHEARTGARD Plus is well tolerated. All dogs should be tested for heartworm infection before starting a preventive program. Following the use of HEARTGARD Plus, digestive and neurological side effects have rarely been reported. For more information, contact your veterinarian or see the prescribing information.
